Step into a whisker-filled adventure through downtown Reykjavik on this walking tour made especially for cat lovers. Part history lesson, part folklore hour, part scavenger hunt for the city's most opinionated residents — this is Reykjavik seen entirely through cat-colored glasses. From settlement-era legends to the neighborhood cats holding court on street corners today, you'll discover how deeply cats have clawed their way into Icelandic stories, homes, and hearts.
Your guide — a self-appointed expert in feline mythology and gossip — shares tales of magical cats, mischievous folklore creatures, and legendary felines from Iceland and beyond, all delivered with a wink and a healthy respect for cats' general disdain for schedules. Keep your eyes peeled for downtown Reykjavik's most famous local cats along the route. No promises they'll show up (cats, as ever, do what they want), but the odds are in your favor.
Halfway through, you'll paws for a proper break at Café Babalú, where coffee, hot cocoa, and Icelandic pastries await in a cozy space dedicated to feline wellbeing — the purr-fect chance to warm up and compare cat-spotting notes. From there, the tour winds down near Hallgrímskirkja at the Einar Jónsson Sculpture Garden, a calm, curated finish to a walk full of stories, laughter, and tail-wagging energy (well — mostly tail-swishing, if we're being accurate about cats).
A portion of proceeds from every tour goes to the Cat Protection Society, helping care for cats in need around Reykjavik — so you can feel good knowing this bit of fun gives back too.
We meet up outside Hlöllabátar, facing Ingólfstorg Square and the two tall stone pillars. CenterHotel Plaza is to your right. Benches, tables, and a covered ceiling make it a comfortable spot to wait. Our expert local guides usually wear a light blue jacket with Your Friend in Reykjavik on the back. The meeting point on google maps:
Our first stop is at Gyllti Kötturinn. There we try to spot Baktus the Cat, probably the second most famous Cat of Iceland (After the Christmas Cat of course)
We walk to a bookstore to look for the Christmas Cat. Legend tells us that the Christmas Cat can sometimes be found in this excellent downtown book store
We visit a hidden garden and learn about Cats in Icelandic Folklore
We check out the Reykjavik Pond. Nestled in the heart of Reykjavik lies Tjörnin, affectionately dubbed the Reykjavik Pond—a serene sanctuary amidst the city's vibrant rhythm. Here, the tranquil waters weave stories of everyday life as locals and visitors mingle, sharing moments of quiet reflection and joy. With its graceful swans and the gentle buzz of nature, Tjörnin offers a serene respite, inviting all to unwind in its soothing embrace.
The backstreets of Reykjavik, checking out cats. We continue our stories about Cats, through history.
Café Babalú
We have to check out some Reykjavik Cat related goods. We visit a store that offers beautiful Cat Related designs
We pass by Hallgrímskirkja Church. Welcome to Hallgrimmskirkja, Reykjavik's architectural giant that screams "I'm the tallest kid on the block!" Our guides from Your Friend in Reykjavik know all the juicy, fun tales about this iconic landmark. We'll make sure your visit isn't just about ogling at the grandeur; we'll throw in some quirky stories to keep you entertained. Get ready to laugh, learn, and maybe even strike a pose like a Viking conqueror at the top! Who said sightseeing can't be a barrel of laughs?
Our Final stop is at the Sculpture Garden of Einar Jonsson. There are some cat related sculptures in the Garden and if we are furr-tunate enough we will see some downtown cats there.
