Salzburg has a rich history, evident in its architecture and sights to this day - many of which stem from centuries of archbishopric rule and wealth.

The city is located on the same site as the Roman settlement Juvavum. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, Bishop Rupert founded the city anew in 696. Salzburg's contemporary face characterized by Baroque architectural masterpieces developed in the 17th and 18th century. Today, over one hundred churches, castles and palaces bear witness to the wealth and power of the Salzburg archbishops.

Follow the tracks of world-famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, learn more about the world-famous film "The Sound of Music", explore the historical buildings and listen to entertaining stories about the Archbishops of Salzburg.
