Both of Luxembourg City's self-guided walks cover ground on the rock spur where the old citadel once made this one of Europe's strongest fortresses, the Bock promontory and its casemates still cut into the cliff above the river valleys below. A general hunt takes in that standard ground, the Place d'Armes among its stops. A second sets sightseeing aside for a fictional love story, casting you as Count Siegfried of the Ardennes searching for the legendary Melusina through the same streets and viewpoints.

Both walks last roughly the same time and neither needs a guide. The general hunt's ticket code is all the World City Trail app asks for; GPS handles the rest for an hour to two hours, covering close to the route a first-time visitor would naturally take through an old town smaller than many neighbourhoods in a bigger capital. The romantic quest, unlocked through the Questo app instead, works better as a second walk once the layout is familiar, since it leans on its love-and-legend story more than on covering new ground — thirteen puzzles taking in the Grand Ducal Palace and Notre-Dame Cathedral over 3.5 kilometres.

Practical. Luxembourg City's July days average around 23C and January sits near 3C, with rain in any month rather than a clearly dry or wet season, so pack something waterproof rather than one heavy coat for either walk. The Chemin de la Corniche and the drop down to the Grund district involve real elevation change, so comfortable shoes matter more than the old town's small size suggests. Neither walk depends on weather to run, and both fit easily into a single afternoon.
