The High Atlas is the wall you see from Marrakesh on a clear day. Toubkal tops it at 4,167 metres. Nothing in North Africa is higher, and snow lasts into spring.

The earthquake of September 2023 hit these valleys hard. The Tizi n'Test pass reopened with sections still under repair, and villages are still in scaffolding.

Where a day trip actually goes

Atlas day trips from Marrakesh go to four or five places, and they are not interchangeable.

• Ourika Valley. An hour out, a green river valley where cafés stand their tables in the water.
• Setti Fatma. Head of the Ourika, and the start of a scramble to seven cascades. The first is about forty-five minutes.
• Imlil. Ninety minutes out at 1,740 metres, a walnut village and the trailhead for Toubkal.
• Oukaimeden. Higher again at 2,600 metres, with Bronze Age rock carvings all year and lifts only when the snow comes.
• Tnine Ourika. The valley's souk, and the name says Monday.

A standard day is a drive with a walk in it. Expect an argan cooperative, a Berber house with mint tea, and a tagine by the river. The word hiking covers a lot here.

The serious end

Toubkal takes two days from Imlil, with a night at the refuge above three thousand metres. The first recorded ascent was in 1923. Village treks run three days and up, and winter wants crampons.

Ziplines, mountain-bike descents and e-bike days fill the half-day slot.

Practical

• Temperature. Ten degrees cooler than Marrakesh, more at Oukaimeden. People leave a forty-degree city in shorts and regret it.
• Shoes. The Setti Fatma path is wet rock and loose stone. Sandals end badly.
• Flash floods. The Ourika rises fast after mountain storms, and the riverside cafés stand in the channel.
• Guides. An accredited guide is required for the Toubkal ascent, and papers are checked above Imlil.
• Timing. Departures run between eight and nine. A minibus keeps one clock; a private car picks the valley.
