Self-guided walking in Norway means one route each in Bergen and Oslo, roughly 460 kilometres apart by road and under an hour apart by air. Bergen's threads the wooden warehouses of Bryggen — a UNESCO World Heritage row that has stood in some form since Hanseatic merchants worked the harbour — past the Sailor's Monument and the fish market, a townscape built for walking rather than driving. Oslo's covers a newer, more spread-out capital, mixing the older government quarter around the Storting with a harbourfront rebuilt over the last two decades around the Nobel Peace Center, and out as far as Frogner Park.

Neither city asks for more than a ticket number: type it into the World City Trail app and its GPS takes charge of the route, while every stop doubles as something to listen to for anyone who'd rather not squint at a phone. Bergen's stays compact enough to finish inside the Bryggen and fish-market area alone, in around two hours; Oslo's covers more ground given the capital's size and can run closer to three, though both are built to finish comfortably on foot without needing a tram between stops. No guide's timetable governs either — start whenever, linger where something earns it, and carry on after.

Practical. Bergen's coastal weather runs mild and wet most of the year, with summer highs around 16-19C and January days around 2-4C, but rain gear matters more than warm clothing in a city known for it. Oslo swings colder in winter, with January around -4 to -2C, and warmer and drier in summer than Bergen, around 21-22C on a July day. Rain stops neither walk — pack the waterproof layer and grippy shoes for the cobbled harbour streets and treat a grey Bergen sky as business as usual.
