Braga calls itself the Rome of Portugal, and the self-guided routes here lean on that claim: Bracara Augusta, the Roman town beneath the modern streets, still surfaces as thermal baths, a domus and inscriptions to the Egyptian goddess Isis that puzzle games use as their plot device. Above that Roman layer sits Se de Braga, Portugal's oldest cathedral, begun in the late 11th century, and the baroque Arco da Porta Nova that once served as the city's ceremonial gate. Santa Barbara's flowerbed garden and the Biscainhos Museum, an old aristocratic townhouse, fill in the quieter stretches between the bigger landmarks.

A handful of games split that layered city. Practical. Braga sits inland from Porto and runs hotter in summer as a result, often past 30C in July and August, while winters stay mild and wet, rarely under 8C but rainy more days than not. The Roman-heritage stops are partly underground or in shaded courtyards, a useful break from the sun on the hottest afternoons. Holy Week processions in Braga are among Portugal's largest, filling the historic centre and changing which streets are open to the games for several days each spring.
