day trip atlas mountains imlil valley from Marrakech

7.5 hours
English, French

Departure by car from Marrakesh around 9 in the morning for a 2-hour drive to the Moulay Brahim Gorges. If possible, we will stop at the Asni weekly market, on every Saturday, then on to Imlil (1740m), set in the upper-level foothills of the Western High Atlas Mountains, via a main trailhead with streams and paths branching out in all directions. We leave our vehicle to have a welcome glass of mint tea in the village where you will meet your local guide prior to setting out for a 4-kilometer excursion towards the south to the Berber village of Aroumd (Aremd) (1843m), passing the hamlets of Ait Souka, Targa, and Imoula. We will trek up and down the stark slopes, enjoying the view of the jagged Western High Atlas peaks of the Toubkal Massif before us – Jbels Aguelzim (3547m), Aksouâl (3847m) and the Adrar Adj (3122m).

We stop at Aroumd to explore this village in the Assif Aït Mizane Valley. Aroumd overlooks ancient irrigated terraced fields of barley, corn and vegetables and is surrounded by almond and walnut trees. We then carry on for another half an hour to get to our lunch which will be served among a Berber familly in the village of Achayn prior to setting off back down the other side of the valley to Imlil and our return trip to Marrakesh.
