2-day Atlas Mountains Trekking Tour

Duration
2 days
Languages
English, French, Spanish
Hike through the ancient Kasbahs, mountainside Berber villages and soaring peaks of the Atlas Mountain range.
Known by the Berber people as ‘Idraden Ndaren,’ or ‘Mountains of Mountains’, the Atlas Mountain range is the spine that separates the milder Mediterranean to the north and the desolate Sahara looming in the south. Stretching for 2,500 km across Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria, the Atlas Mountains are a mass of dusty canyons, slicing valleys and cloud-tickling summits.

Itinerary:

DAY 1: Imlil 1780 m-Tizi n’Mzik 2489 m -Ait Aissa 1860m

Early departure from Marrakech. On arrival in Imlil, you will meet your guide and muleteer. Once you have loaded up your bags, the mule and cook set off together, taking a head-start to pick a perfect picnic spot and start cooking your lunch. You will also start on your trek, heading in a westerly direction towards the Tizi h’Mzik mountain pass (2,489 m). After a steady climb, you will be rewarded with beautiful views of the Imlil valley (behind you) and the Azzadene Valley (to the front). From the pass you will traverse towards the head of the Azzadene Valley and the lovely D’Irhoulidene waterfalls which flow year-round. You’ll then head down to the Berber village of Ait Aissa. On your descent, keep an eye out for the mountain goats who daringly climb up the Juniper trees to reach the berries! Approx. 5-6 hours walking (649 m ascent & 779 m descent). Overnight: Azzaden Trekking Lodge 1 night in a standard room with ensuite facilities. Includes lunch and dinner.

DAY 2: Ait Aissa 1860 m - Marigha 1100 m
After an early breakfast you’ll trek down the valley following the course of the Azzadene River passing several traditional picturesque Berber Villages. As you descend the valley, you will find yourself in Mediterranean-esque scenery; surrounded by Juniper trees, low shrubs and wild rosemary and thyme. Passing through the villages of Tiziane and Azerfsane, you'll stop for a picnic lunch by the riverside. Afterwards you’ll continue down the valley to your hotel in the Ouirgane Valley. Approx. 5-6 hours walking (760 m descent). Includes breakfast and dinner.
