4-day Mount Toubkal Trek

4 days
English, French

Jbel Toubkal is the highest peak in North Africa and is known as the roof of North Africa . The hike to the summit is challenging, but it requires no mountaineering experience and the panoramic view from the summit makes the hard work worthwhile. With the start of the trek just a couple of hours drive from Marrakesh, you can reach the summit and still have time to explore Morocco’s most captivating city, Marrakesh.

 Day 1: Marrakesh – Imlil

You will be picked up from your Hotel in Marrakesh at 8:30 am, and drive towards Imlil Valley 1740m where you will be met by a local guide. You will check in at a guesthouse before your set off on an acclimatizing hike to Tizi Mzik pass 2489m where you will have a stop for lunch prepared by a cook. After the lunch break, you will walk back down via the same route to your lodge in Imlil where you will spend the night. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

Day 2: Imlil  – Toubkal Refuge

After breakfast at your lodge, you will start hiking along the Mizane Valley, first towards the village of Aremd and then onto the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch. Built on a moraine spur overlooking the valley floor, Aremd is the largest village in the valley and provides an interesting mix of traditional terraced farming, gites and streets that seem to be permanently gridlocked by goats and cattle. For generations the local Berber villagers have worked these lands, producing corn, potatoes and walnuts from the harsh landscape. Continuing east and crossing the flood plain our route takes us along mule tracks and up into the high rocky cliffs above the valley. Crossing the river we eventually come to the pastoral shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, which attracts tourists and pilgrims alike (although only Muslims are allowed to cross the stone bridge to visit the marabout shrine itself). The village sits beside a small waterfall, a jumbled cluster of houses that seem to melt together into an anarchic mass. From here the trail continues to climb steadily, snaking and zigzagging its way up to the Toukbal Refuge (3206m), our stop for the night. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

Day 3: Refuge - Toubkal Summit  – Refuge

5 to 7h walk. After an early breakfast, you make your attempt on the summit of Jebel Toukbal, the highest peak in Northern Africa. your route takes you up the south cirque, crossing the stream above the refuge and then heading across one of the mountains numerous scree fields, where you will have to negotiable a seemingly endless carpet of boulders and rocks. The walking is relatively straightforward, but the scree and the altitude will make the going quite difficult in parts, however, the views along the way make the journey more than worthwhile. Cresting the ridgeline you find yourselves on the plateau, from where it is a short walk to the summit and the vistas out across the surrounding landscape are quite breathtaking. From here there are unrestricted views in every direction, from the Marrakesh Plain to the High Atlas in the north and as far south as the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara. Pliny, the great Roman scholar, once described the High Atlas Mountains as “the most fabulous mountains in all of Africa” and from your vantage point high above the valley it is easy to understand why. Retracing your steps, you then return down the mountain to the basecamp where you will have lunch & overnight again. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

Today, you will walk back down to Imlil via the same route. Once you get to Imlil, you will have a stop for lunch at a lodge before transfer back to Marrakesh.Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.
