Stepanavan has a century-long history. We can trace its origins and evolution back to the third and first centuries BC (pottery objects discovered in the territory attest to this). The first city plan was created in 1957, the second in 1962, and the third major plan in 1971. Following the December 7, 1988 earthquake, the city was immediately rebuilt and expanded to the left bank of the Dzoraget. Stepanavan is 36 kilometers from Vanadzor's regional headquarters.
The Stepanavan Dendropark and the walled city of Lori (and the fortress), built in 1005-1025 by David Anhoghin, are fascinating places for tourists to visit. Stepanavan Dendropark is a natural forest that has been conserved as a park, with almost as many ornamental trees as wild forest trees. It is Armenia's most significant botanical park and the ideal venue to explore Armenian nature in all its splendor and richness. The chilly air here is highly beneficial for persons with respiratory difficulties, especially during pine tree pollination in May. And Lori is a fantastic location that remains an under-the-radar attraction in Northern Armenia.
