Sevanavank is a monastery complex located on the Sevan peninsula of the Gegharkunik region. According to the materials found, the first church of St. Harutyun (Sunday) was built by Gregory the Illuminator on the site of a pagan temple on the island (now a peninsula) of Lake Sevan. It was destroyed due to an earthquake in 995. In the 9th century, the monk Mesrop Yeghivardetsi (later Catholicos Mesrop A Yeghivardetsi) founded the monastery of St. Arakelots. According to church records, the current monastery was founded in 874 by the daughter of Ashot A, Princess Mariam. Subsequently, the monastery was surrounded by a wall, which was destroyed in 16-17.
