Itinerary

129 km south of Bariloche on Route 40, is the town of El Bolsón. The fully paved route borders the Gutierrez, Mascardi and Guillelmo Lakes and crosses the Villegas, Foyel and Quemquemtreu rivers to enter the city. There is an inescapable visit to the famous Craft Fair that brings together a huge amount of local products and to the farms, which produce fine and sweet fruits. Cheeses and craft beer are famous. 16 km away is the town of Lago Puelo, the National Park and homonymous lake, worth visiting for its colorful waters of turquoise tones.

Departure from Bariloche. We begin our journey in the center of Bariloche, heading south on the iconic Route 40. As we drive, we skirt the shores of beautiful Lake Gutiérrez, with spectacular views of the Catedral Mountain and the surrounding Andes range.

Mascardi and Guillermo Lake. Our route continues alongside the striking Lake Mascardi, known for its deep blues and the mountainous terrain that surrounds it. Further on, we pass Lake Guillermo, another gem in the Patagonian landscape, before immersing ourselves in the southern stretch of the Andean corridor.

Río Villegas – Conifer Forests. As we approach Río Villegas, you’ll notice the scenery shifting—this region is home to vast man-made forests of conifers. It’s a striking contrast to the native vegetation and a reminder of the area’s diverse ecosystems and forestry efforts.

Arrival in El Bolsón. Nestled in a fertile valley at the foot of Mount Piltriquitrón, El Bolsón welcomes us with its laid-back atmosphere, artistic soul, and natural beauty. Located 129 km from Bariloche, this mountain village is known for its sustainable lifestyle and artisanal traditions.

Trout Farm Visit. Our first stop in El Bolsón is a local trout hatchery, where you’ll learn about the farming and breeding of Patagonian trout—an important regional delicacy. Enjoy the peaceful setting and discover the life cycle of these freshwater fish.

Artisan Jam Factory. Next, we visit a small factory that produces homemade jams using berries native to the region such as elderberry, raspberry, and calafate. Sample delicious flavors and see how these traditional preserves are made.

Lago Puelo National Park. Located just 16 km from El Bolsón, this park is a highlight of the tour. With its turquoise lake framed by green hills and distant snow-capped peaks, Lago Puelo is a picture-perfect destination for a relaxing walk and incredible photos. Enjoy some free time to soak in the scenery or explore a bit of the forest trails.

Artisan Market at Plaza Pagano. Back in El Bolsón, we visit one of the most famous attractions: the bustling artisan fair at Plaza Pagano. Here, local artists and craftspeople display handmade creations in wood, metal, wool, leather, and ceramics. Watch live demonstrations, shop for unique souvenirs, and connect with the authentic spirit of this vibrant community.

Return to Bariloche. After a full day of scenic landscapes and cultural immersion, we begin our drive back to Bariloche along Route 40, taking in once more the incredible Patagonian scenery.
