Description complète

This bike tour is about nineteenth-century Amsterdam. It was a tremendously vibrant time when, after a long period of stagnation and a century of hibernation, the country suddenly awakened and surged forward with full force - out of slums, impoverished villages, remarkably outdated technology, and, by Dutch standards, a monstrous level of stratification. This surge was so intense that the country once again became one of the most advanced economies in the world. And in such tumultuous times, not only did brilliant discoveries, extraordinary accomplishments, and noble deeds take place, but also considerably less admirable events. And how out of all this, in a very logical manner, a new world was born - the world we live in now.

On this bike tour of Amsterdam, you will see almost the whole city center and a myriad of exciting places that cannot be covered on a walking tour.

Itinéraire

We will begin our bike tour at the Central Station of Amsterdam, which was a rather controversial building in the end of the 19th century and we will discuss what were the reasons for that.

We will visit a close by Saint Nicholas Cathedral and learn about the religious attitudes of that time period.

We will pass by the main square of the city, the Dam square, on which we will talk about Napoleon and the beginning of monarchy.

In the city center we will also see some impressive monuments of Dutch writers (Rembrandt, Multatuli, Vobdel) find out more about the Dutch colonial past and birth of nationalism.

We will bike over a fancy bridge which inspired Claude Monet to paint his masterpieces, which changed art forever.

On Waterlooplein we will visit a market with all kinds of goods.

Closer to the end of the tour, we are going to see the Heinekens brewery of the 19th century, talk about industry and trade.

Afterwards, we are going to be fascinated by the International Theatre of Amsterdam and eventually by Rijksmuseum, a museum with the most prominent collection of the country that takes your breath away
