Ten minutes in you are reading a building like it owes you something, and the rest of the afternoon disappears. That is the thing about a good story in a good city -- it absorbs you without asking you to concentrate. The case runs across Champaign with clues that make you look twice at things you have walked past a hundred times, places genuinely worth standing in, and a narrative that keeps opening up just when you think you have it figured out. You will find yourself noticing details you would normally miss: the shape of a window, the name above a door, the way a street curves when you expected it to go straight.
