Self-Guided Tours in Latvia

Latvia's self-guided walking is a Riga story told twice, on two different sides of the same old walls. One route keeps to the medieval quarter — the cathedral square, the guild halls, lanes that predate the country by centuries. The other steps past those walls into the wide Art Nouveau streets, where entire blocks of turn-of-the-century apartment buildings hold the kind of ornament that makes Riga's collection one of the densest anywhere in Europe. Outside the capital, Cēsis keeps its own medieval castle and walled lanes, and Sigulda folds a river gorge into what locals call 'Latvian Switzerland' — both an easy train ride out, neither yet turned into a walk of its own.

Neither Riga route needs a guide: a phone leads the way, a group sets its own pace, and the two differ mainly in ground covered. The medieval walk opens with a ticket's ten-digit code inside the World City Trail app, then lets GPS handle the rest, with every stop available to listen to rather than read — about two hours, touching most of the churches and squares a guided tour would stop at. The Art Nouveau route, on the Questo app instead, runs a little shorter and steps into the shoes of a stonemason chasing a sneezing carving, working through streets a standard sightseeing loop tends to skip entirely.

Practical. Expect a July afternoon in Riga near 22C, and sub-zero, snow-covered weeks through most of January and February, which makes spring and autumn the gentler season for either walk. Winter ice lingers longest on the medieval quarter's old cobbles; the newer Art Nouveau streets are flatter and clear faster, so footwear matters more on one route than the other. Rain or snow does not cancel either booking — both run on the traveller's own schedule, not the sky's.
