Self-Guided Tours in Poland

Poland spreads this format across four cities that don't resemble each other much. Kraków keeps its medieval centre almost intact — the Cloth Hall splitting the Main Square, St Mary's Basilica, and Wawel rising over the Vistula — with the old Jewish Quarter a short walk beyond it. Wrocław plays out around its island cathedral and a market square a few streets from the University; Gdańsk follows the Long Market's merchant houses from the Golden Gate to Neptune's Fountain, with amber jewellery sold along Mariacka Street the way it has been for generations. Warsaw's Old Town Market Square looks equally historic, though almost none of it is: the whole quarter was rebuilt after the Second World War from paintings and photographs.

All four use the same system. Redeeming it just needs the ten-digit code the World City Trail app sends after purchase; from there GPS handles the routing, with a spoken-clue option running throughout for anyone who'd rather listen than read mid-walk. Kraków and Warsaw run the longest at about three hours each, Wrocław and Gdańsk closer to two. None needs a booking slot or a guide, and each pauses and resumes freely — useful in Kraków especially, where the route runs long enough to want a lunch break in the Jewish Quarter partway through.

Practical. Kraków and Warsaw see July highs near 24C and January highs near -1C; Gdańsk, on the Baltic coast, stays a touch cooler in summer and windier year-round. The Polish złoty is the local currency, and cards are accepted almost everywhere in all four centres. Warsaw's Old Town closes some interiors on Mondays, and Kraków's Cloth Hall galleries keep their own separate hours from the square around them. Comfortable shoes matter more than a season here: all four routes cross cobblestones for most of their length.
