Piazza del Duomo offers a breathtaking setting, especially at sunset, when the sunlight enhances the polychrome marble façades of Florence’s religious complex. The harmonious blend of green, white, and red marble reflects centuries of architectural evolution.

Construction of the complex spanned nearly four centuries: the Baptistery dates back to the 11th century, while the Dome was completed by Filippo Brunelleschi in the 15th century. With its imposing structure, the Dome dominates the skyline and represents the heart of Florence.

The experience begins at the Baptistery, one of the city’s oldest and most significant buildings. Through carefully curated multilingual audio content, created by our art historians, you will explore the magnificent Byzantine mosaics decorating the vault and admire Lorenzo Ghiberti’s masterpiece, the east doors known as the “Gate of Paradise.”

The visit continues at the Opera del Duomo Museum, home to invaluable original artworks from the Cathedral complex. Here, you will encounter masterpieces that narrate the artistic and spiritual history of Florence.

This innovative tour format combines the flexibility of a multilingual audio guide with live expert commentary from a professional guide who accompanies the group throughout the experience. The guide is available in Italian and English to provide additional insights, contextual explanations, and to answer your questions in real time - ensuring a dynamic, inclusive, and engaging visit.

With the same ticket used for the tour, you may also visit the Cathedral and the Crypt independently at your own pace.

Route

San Giovanni Baptistery - Guided Tour. The Baptistery of San Giovanni is one of Florence’s oldest monuments, located in Piazza del Duomo. Dating back to the 4th–5th century, it is a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, characterized by its octagonal shape and white and green marble façade. The interior is famous for its magnificent golden mosaic ceiling, depicting the Last Judgment, and for the renowned Gates of Paradise by Lorenzo Ghiberti. For centuries, the baptistery served as the baptismal site for Florentines, including Dante Alighieri, making it a must-visit for history and art enthusiasts.

Opera del Duomo Museum - Guided Tour. The Opera del Duomo Museum in Florence is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the original artworks and sculptures from the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Giotto’s Bell Tower, and the Baptistery of San Giovanni. Located behind the Duomo, the museum houses masterpieces by Michelangelo, Donatello, Ghiberti, and Luca della Robbia. Among its highlights are Michelangelo’s Pietà, the original bronze panels of Ghiberti’s "Gates of Paradise", and a stunning reconstruction of the Duomo’s original medieval façade. The museum offers a fascinating insight into the artistic and architectural evolution of Florence’s most important religious monuments, making it a must-visit for art and history lovers.

Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral. The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, commonly known as the Florence Duomo, is one of the most iconic landmarks of Renaissance architecture. Located in Piazza del Duomo, it was designed in Gothic style by Arnolfo di Cambio and later crowned with the revolutionary Brunelleschi’s Dome, completed in 1436. The cathedral’s striking white, green, and pink marble façade was finished in the 19th century. Inside, visitors can admire the breathtaking Last Judgment frescoes by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari, magnificent stained glass windows, and the Crypt of Santa Reparata, which preserves the remains of the ancient church that preceded the Duomo.

Santa Reparata Crypt. The Santa Reparata Crypt, located beneath the Florence Cathedral (Santa Maria del Fiore), is an important archaeological site that preserves the remains of the early Christian basilica of Santa Reparata, which predates the Duomo. Dating back to the 4th–5th century, this ancient church served as Florence’s main cathedral until the construction of the Duomo began in the 13th century. Visitors can explore well-preserved mosaics, frescoes, and Roman-era remains, along with tombs of Florentine bishops. One of the most significant tombs is believed to belong to Filippo Brunelleschi, the architect of the Duomo’s famous dome. The Santa Reparata Crypt offers a fascinating glimpse into Florence’s early Christian and medieval history, making it a must-visit site for history enthusiasts.
