Sofia hosts one self-guided walk of its own and serves as the starting point for a second that spends the whole day somewhere else entirely. The city walk is a puzzle quest built around Sofia's decades under communist rule, moving between sites tied to that period rather than the older Roman and Ottoman layers underneath the modern capital. The other product, although it starts from Sofia, is really a Plovdiv trip — a full day out to one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited towns, with the drive there and back built into the price.

The two run on very different clocks. The communist-history quest takes about two hours on foot through central Sofia, a phone and a small group following clues between landmarks near St Nedelya Church rather than a guide's script. The Plovdiv day runs about eight hours door to door with a private car and driver but no guide: the old town, the Roman theatre and the Kapana district are yours to walk at your own pace, and entrance fees are paid there.

Practical. Sofia's summers reach 28-30C in July and August and winters drop below freezing with regular snow, so the outdoor quest works best from April to October. The Plovdiv day trip is worth booking a day or two ahead rather than the same morning, since a driver's schedule, not a phone app, sets its availability. Flat, sturdy shoes help on both — Sofia's central streets are a mix of cobbles and modern paving, and Plovdiv's old town hill involves real climbing over uneven stone.
