Itinerary

Door-to-door pickup — Greater Lisbon area. Your guide picks you up directly from your hotel. Depending on where you are staying, we leave Lisbon via the 25 de Abril bridge or the Vasco da Gama bridge — both offer a striking start to the day.

The road south — Lisbon to Algarve. We take the A2, the main highway connecting Lisbon to the Algarve — the fastest and most comfortable route south. It's around 2h30 before our first stop. Rest stops with fuel and facilities appear roughly every 20 minutes along the way.

"Seven Hanging Valleys Trail" → Praia da Marinha — coastal walk. One of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal, Praia da Marinha sits between Carvoeiro and Benagil along a dramatic stretch of golden cliffs. For the 7 AM departure, we stop here for an easy 30–40 minute coastal walk — a rare chance to experience this coastline from both land and sea before the boat takes you inside the caves.

Boneca & Algar Seco — rock formations. A short walk from the car, Boneca and Algar Seco are part of the same dramatic rock formation near Carvoeiro. The colours and shapes carved by the Atlantic over centuries are unlike anything else on this coast — a natural sculpture that rewards those who arrive on foot.

Boat trip to Benagil sea cave. The centrepiece of the day. We board a small boat — usually from Portimão, depending on sea conditions — and head along the Algarve coast to Benagil, one of the most photographed sea caves in Portugal. The journey takes you past a succession of dramatic cliffs, arches and hidden sea caves before entering Benagil itself.

Inside Benagil — the caves. The boat trip lasts between 1h15 and 1h45, taking you inside a series of sea caves along this stretch of coast — Benagil being the most iconic. Light filters through natural openings in the rock, illuminating the cave walls and the turquoise water below. It is one of those places that is genuinely difficult to describe and easy to remember.

Afternoon — yours to choose. After the boat, lunch is on your own at a local restaurant — your guide will know exactly where to go. The afternoon is then open. Options include exploring the sea cliffs of Lagos, spending time in Albufeira, relaxing on an Algarve beach, or taking the scenic route back along the west coast. In summer, the coastal return is a beautiful way to end the day. In winter, with shorter daylight hours, the highway is the more practical choice. Either way, the decision is yours.
