Accademia Gallery. The Accademia Gallery in Florence is one of the most visited museums in Italy, famous for housing Michelangelo's David, one of the most iconic sculptures in the world. Michelangelo's David. Michelangelo's David is one of the most iconic sculptures in the world and a masterpiece of Renaissance art. Carved from a single block of Carrara marble, it was created by Michelangelo Buonarroti between 1501 and 1504 and stands at an impressive 5.17 meters (17 feet) tall.Originally commissioned for Florence Cathedral, the statue was later placed in Piazza della Signoria as a symbol of the strength and independence of the Florentine Republic.
