Private Venice Walking Tour: Jewish Ghetto, Rialto & St. Mark’s Square

3 hours 30 minutes · Private guided walking tour

Walk through the changing worlds of Venice with a private local guide. Begin in the historic Jewish Ghetto, follow the streets of Cannaregio and San Polo to the trading district of Rialto, then finish among the monuments of St. Mark’s Square.

This tour connects three parts of the city that played very different roles in Venetian history. Along the way, you’ll have time to ask questions, notice the details around you and discover how Venice grew through its communities, waterways and trade.

Begin in the Jewish Ghetto

In 1516, the Venetian Senate required Jews living in the city to reside in a designated quarter of Cannaregio. As you walk through Ghetto Nuovo and Ghetto Vecchio, your guide will explain the restrictions residents faced and the religious, cultural and commercial life they built here.

Look up at the tall buildings and learn about the historic synagogues within the quarter. In the main square, pause at the memorials to Venetian Jews deported during the Second World War. The Ghetto is a place to understand both difficult chapters of history and the continuity of Venice’s Jewish community.

An interior synagogue visit is not part of the standard walk; it may be arranged separately when available.

Walk Through Cannaregio and San Polo

Leave the Ghetto and continue through Cannaregio and San Polo. The precise streets can vary, giving your guide room to choose an enjoyable route for the day. You may pass quiet canals and small squares or follow livelier streets where Venetians still go about their daily business.

As you walk, hear how bridges linked neighbourhoods, how boats supplied a city without roads, and how different communities contributed to Venice’s character.

Discover Rialto

At Rialto, the mood changes again. For centuries, this was the centre of Venetian commerce, where markets, merchants and financial activity brought people together.

Explore the market area and cross the Rialto Bridge. Pause for a view of the Grand Canal, Venice’s main waterway, lined with palaces that speak to the fortunes made through trade. Your guide will explain why this crossing and the district around it mattered so much to the Republic.

Finish in St. Mark’s Square

Continue through the streets of San Marco to Piazza San Marco, the ceremonial centre of Venice. From outside, admire St. Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, the Campanile and the Clock Tower as your guide explains how religion, government and public ceremony came together in this square.

The tour ends here, giving you time to enjoy the setting or continue exploring independently.
