วางแผนการเดินทางไปBasilica Cistern

The Basilica Cistern is a reservoir, not a ruin. Justinian had it dug in 532, in the building programme that raised Hagia Sophia over the road. It held eighty thousand cubic metres of water.

What holds the roof up

Three hundred and thirty-six marble columns, nine metres tall, set in twelve rows. Most were taken from older Roman buildings. No two capitals match.

In the far corner two heads of Medusa were reused as column bases. One lies on her side, the other upside down. Nobody can prove why.

The water arrived by aqueduct from the Belgrade Forest, nineteen kilometres to the north. None of it was pumped. The whole system ran on the slope of the land.

How it was found again

The Ottomans half-forgot it. In 1545 a French scholar heard that houses above drew water, and sometimes fish, through their basement floors. He had himself rowed between the columns, and his book put the place back on the map.

The visit

A stair drops from a small building beside Hagia Sophia into a lit forest of columns. A walkway runs above the water, with a steady drip overhead. Forty minutes covers it.

Restoration work reopened the cistern in 2022 with new lighting and sound installations, and opinion on those splits. The temperature has not changed. This is the cool half-hour in the middle of a hot Sultanahmet day.

Practical

  • The queue. In summer it outlasts the visit, which is the whole argument for an entry that skips it.
  • Layers. It stays cool and close to saturated down there whatever August is doing above ground.
  • Footing and light. The walkway is wet and the lighting is deliberately dim. Flat soles, and a camera that copes without flash.
  • Evenings. A separate later session runs after the daytime one closes, on its own ticket and with far fewer people in it.
  • Getting there. Two minutes from Hagia Sophia and the Sultanahmet tram stop. Nothing to arrange.
