Self-Guided Tours in Prague

Self-guided in Prague covers two very different things. Most of it is audio-guided visits to specific sites, bought with or without an entry ticket: Prague Castle alone comes wrapped in half a dozen overlapping ticket-and-audio-guide combinations, some bundled with a bus transfer, all covering the same St Vitus Cathedral, Old Royal Palace, Basilica of St George and Golden Lane. Beyond the Castle, standalone guides cover Vyšehrad, the Žižkov TV Tower, the Jewish Quarter's synagogues, Old Town Square, and Prague Zoo. Only a handful are puzzle games: a scavenger hunt, plus three story walks chasing a plague doctor, a ghost version of Emperor Charles IV, and the memory of Franz Kafka.

The audio guides work almost the same way: buy online, get a login link by email, and open it on your phone at the site — no ticket needed for guides marked without one, a real ticket for the rest, a few requiring a stop at a local office to collect a physical pass first. One outlier breaks the free-roaming pattern: the zoo transfer follows a fixed minibus departure rather than start-anytime flexibility. The four puzzle games work differently — a ten-digit code and GPS for the sightseeing hunt, the Questo app and scripted chapters for the story walks — and these start whenever suits, pausing and resuming freely.

Practical. Prague runs close to 24C in July and 0C in January, cold enough in winter that queueing outside the Castle gates is worth dressing for. A working mobile connection and headphones matter more here than in puzzle-only cities, since most of these audio guides stream rather than download. The Castle's outer courtyards are free to enter; the interiors named on these tickets need the paid admission the audio guide is often bundled with. A Prague transport day ticket covers the metro, trams and buses, useful for reaching Vyšehrad or the zoo without the tour's own transfer. Czech koruna is the local currency, though central Prague accepts cards almost everywhere.
