Time to walk around Fener the quarter midway up, among the historic wooden mansions, churches and synagogues from the Byzantine. Next step is Ayvansaray. The neighborhood got its name from Persian, which translates as Veranda Palace. It used to be one of the most important areas of Constantinople and features a Byzantine palace complex, the Palace of Blachernae, once used by the late Byzantine emperors.
