Georgia has one town that trades on this openly and several that manage it without trying. Sighnaghi is the open one: a small walled town on a ridge over the Alazani valley, the Caucasus on the far side, and a registry office keeping hours no other Georgian town does, which is why couples have come here to marry at short notice for decades. The unstated ones are better. Abanotubani, the domed sulphur bath quarter under the Tbilisi fortress, rents private rooms by the hour rather than seats in a pool. Abastumani is a mountain resort built in the 1890s for tuberculosis patients, quiet to the point of eeriness, with an astrophysical observatory in the pines above. Practical. Sighnaghi is worth a night, not a day: the coaches leave around five and the town changes afterwards. Anyone planning to actually marry there should settle the paperwork with the operator well in advance, since the requirements depend on nationality. Baths are booked as a room, with a price per hour that several people can share, and the scrub is ordered separately. September and October in Kakheti mean the harvest, which is the best time to be there and the hardest to book late. Guesthouse rooms in the mountains are simple; the view is the luxury and the plumbing is not.
