Rhodes has a green middle, which is rare for an island this size at this latitude. The Attavyros ridge rises to twelve hundred metres, the slopes carry pine and cypress, and where the coast is scorched stone, the interior holds shade. Jeep safaris to the north and the south work precisely with that contrast: dirt tracks, viewpoints that take in both coasts at once, hill villages, and stops at farms that feed you what grows around them.

The island's headline natural event is the Valley of the Butterflies. From June to September thousands of Panaxia moths gather in a narrow gorge threaded with streams and settle on the plane trunks so densely that the bark looks mottled. The rule is simple: no noise, no clapping — startled moths burn energy they cannot spare before autumn. Boardwalks and small bridges lead up along the water to the monastery, an hour's climb at an unhurried pace.

The water supplies the other half of the programme. A cruise along the east coast passes cliffs on the way to roadless bays and stops to swim where every stone is visible on the bottom. A first scuba dive takes place in a sheltered cove: the instructor beside you, gear handed out on site, the depth modest. And the trip to Halki adds a day on an island with no tour coaches and barely any roads — just one village above the harbour.
