Things to do in Tirana

17 experiences Albania

Plan your trip to Tirana

Tirana was a communist showpiece for decades. It rebuilt itself twice over since: once after 1990, again in the last ten years. Skanderbeg Square sits at its centre, some 40,000 square metres ringed by the buildings that tell both stories.

Around the square, and one district apart from it

The Et'hem Bey Mosque dates from around 1821. It faces the National History Museum, with Bunk'Art's old bunkers turned into museums nearby. Blloku, once sealed off for the party elite, is now the city's bar district.

  • Skanderbeg Square — the mosque, the clock tower, and the history museum's mural front all facing in.
  • The Pyramid — Enver Hoxha's 1988 mausoleum, reopened as a tech and youth centre after decades empty.
  • Bunk'Art 1 and 2 — a mountain bunker and a city-centre one, both built for a leadership that feared invasion.
  • Blloku — the former restricted quarter, ten minutes' walk from the square, now cafés and nightlife.

Above the city, and just outside it

The Dajti Ekspres cable car climbs 4.3 kilometres to the mountain behind Tirana, the longest such line in the Balkans. Kruja is the other easy trip. It sits under an hour north of the city.

  • Dajti Ekspres — opened in 2005, a fifteen-minute ride each way to a top station just over 1,000 metres up.
  • Kruja — Skanderbeg's castle, which held off three Ottoman sieges between 1450 and 1467, plus the old bazaar below it.
  • Petrelë Castle — a smaller hilltop fort, often paired with Kruja in one half-day.

Practical

  • Weather. August highs reach around 31C; January sits near 11C, mild for the season but often wet.
  • Currency. The lek; cards work in the centre, cash rules smaller shops and the bazaar.
  • Getting around. The centre is walkable; taxis and ride apps cover the rest cheaply.
  • Tipping. Ten per cent in restaurants is common, not obligatory.
  • Evenings. Blloku runs late; the rest of the centre quiets down earlier.
  • Booking ahead. The cable car queues badly on weekends; weekday mornings run clear.
