Boat trips out of Hersonissos divide by distance. The near one is the Mirabello gulf: the boat runs east along the shore to Agios Nikolaos and comes out at Spinalonga, the fortress islet where Europe's last leper colony lived until 1957. Venetian bastions, the patients' houses, the cemetery — the island is walked in an hour, and the swim in the bay afterwards feels like an earned pause. It is the most substantial sea day of eastern Crete.
The middle distance is west: a full-day run to Balos and Gramvousa. The drive across the island to Kissamos takes the morning, but then come the pirate fortress on its rock, sandbars with knee-deep water, and the very view the lagoon is printed on covers for. Return by nightfall; the day is long, but there is no other way to see Balos from Hersonissos.
The far distance is Santorini. An early transfer to Heraklion's port, a ferry across the Aegean, a day on the caldera — Fira, Oia, the volcanic cliffs — and the return sailing by evening. Formally a cruise, in essence another island in a single day: the one case where you can have breakfast and dinner in two different worlds without leaving Crete behind for more than a day.
