Self-Guided Tours in Basel

Basel's two self-guided walks circle the same short loop: cathedral square, then down toward the river, then back through the old market streets. Along the way come the Pfalz terrace above the Rhine, Elisabethenkirche's Gothic spire, the Spalentor city gate and the Kunstmuseum, with the mechanical fountain sculptures at Tinguely-Brunnen included as a change of pace from all that history.

The two options split on mechanics rather than ground covered. One works from a code: punch the ten digits into the World City Trail app, and its GPS keeps you on course, with a narrator available for whoever would rather listen than read. The other needs no code at all — Explorial's free app comes with its own live map, stops already pinned, and keeps score if the group would rather compete than wander. Expect around two hours between the opening stop and the last either way, and neither ticket costs more than ten euros.

Practical. Basel stays mild for the season in summer, July days peaking near 25C, and the Rhine becomes the real relief from it: locals swim down it inside sealed bags called Wickelfisch each year from June to September, with both routes passing close enough to the bank to join in. Winter bites harder, January highs closer to 4C, so a coat outranks anything else that might get packed for the walk. The Kunstmuseum and its neighbours mostly shut on Mondays, so save that stop for a different day.
