Plan your trip to Bruges

Bruges keeps its medieval street plan almost intact, laced by canals wide enough for a boat but too narrow for cars. UNESCO listed the historic centre in 2000. The Belfry climbs 83 metres over the Markt, 366 steps up for the view.

Inside the ring of canals

  • Markt and Belfry. The main square and its bell tower, 366 steps to the top.
  • Church of Our Lady. Holds Michelangelo's Madonna and Child, bought by a Bruges merchant family in 1504 — one of the few of his works to leave Italy in his lifetime.
  • Burg square and the Basilica of the Holy Blood. A relic chapel tradition says holds blood brought back from the Crusades.
  • Béguinage. A walled community founded for lay religious women in the 13th century; Benedictine nuns still live there.

What people book here

Bruges is a canal city, and the catalogue agrees. A boat covers the ring in half an hour; everything else takes longer.

  • Canal boat. A half-hour circuit through the historic ring, running most of the day.
  • Balloon flight. A dawn or afternoon ride over the rooftops and the belfry.
  • Self-guided games. Mystery walks and scavenger hunts through the old streets, phone-led.

Practical

  • Weather. Around 21C in July, 6C in January; wind off the coast can make a boat ride feel colder than that even in a mild-looking month.
  • Getting around. The centre is entirely walkable; cars are restricted inside the canal ring anyway.
  • Crowds. Day-trippers from Brussels and cruise groups from Zeebrugge fill the Markt by midday; mornings are quieter.
  • Language. Dutch first, though English covers every shop and restaurant in the centre.
  • Tipping. Already in the bill; rounding up is normal, nothing more.
