Self-Guided Tours in Belgium

Self-guided walking turns up across seven Belgian towns, and each hunt is built around its own old centre rather than a shared script. Bruges plays it among canals and gabled houses past the Belfry; Ghent works the Graslei quays and Saint Bavo's Cathedral, with a second, puzzle-driven walk over Kouter and the Van Eyck monument. Dinant runs along the Meuse below its citadel, past the Adolphe Sax monument in the town that gave the world the saxophone. Leuven circles the Grote Markt, Liège pairs its cathedral with a waffle break, and Antwerp moves from the cathedral of Our Lady to the Plantin-Moretus print house. Brussels holds the richest spread, several walks layered over the streets around the Grand Place.

Most of these open the same short way: a ticket number into the World City Trail app, then GPS steering while a spoken clue plays for anyone who'd rather listen than stare at a screen. Ghent's second walk and two of Brussels's alternatives switch engines entirely: a lottery-themed hunt in Ghent and a mystery game in Brussels both play out through the Questo app, closer to an escape room than a sightseeing loop, while a gold-quest hunt and a beer walk in Brussels unlock instead with a code sent to your phone. Nobody in the group waits on anyone else, and any of them can stop for a coffee halfway.

Practical. Belgian weather stays grey and showery most of the year, with July days around 22-23C and January nearer 5-6C, so a waterproof layer matters more than the calendar does. Cobbled old-town streets turn slick fast in rain, and flat shoes beat anything with a smooth sole on Bruges's or Ghent's canal-side stone. None of these walks depends on the weather to run, unlike a canal cruise, so a wet afternoon is still a normal afternoon for a phone-led route. Most are timed loosely enough to pause for a waffle or a beer without losing the thread of the clues.
