Animals in Alanya

Alanya keeps only a few programmes with animals, and they differ in spirit. The first is a horseback safari in the Taurus foothills: the stables stand about half an hour from the town centre, and the route crosses pine forest, passes ancient ruins and a village that still works its land. The outing fills half a day, instructors work with complete beginners and horses are matched to the rider's level, so first-timers are taken into the group as well.

The second is the dolphinarium on the edge of Alanya, with a half-hour show of dolphins and seals. The format is aimed at families, the performance runs to music and a trainer's commentary, and hotel transfer is usually part of the ticket. It is a short trip that fits between the beach and lunch without eating a whole day, unlike most excursions into the mountains.

Worth knowing in advance. For the horse route wear long trousers and closed shoes — shorts chafe against the saddle, and scrub is better crossed with covered legs; helmets are handed out on site. In summer rides are scheduled for early morning or late afternoon, because midday heat in the hills is hard on horses and people alike. For the dolphinarium it makes sense to confirm the show time, since there are only a few sessions a day and visitors arrive ahead of them.
