Transfers in Rethymno

Crete runs some two hundred and fifty kilometres from west to east, and public transport follows that line: coaches shuttle along the north highway between Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion, while everything off that axis has no timetable at all. So most journeys from Rethymno are tours with a driver — the car collects you at the hotel, the route is assembled around the group, and it includes places no service bus reaches. Chania is an hour away, Heraklion with Knossos an hour and a half; both are done in a day with stops along the road.

The south is the strongest argument for this format. It is forty minutes over the mountains to the Libyan Sea, and there a fan of destinations opens up, linked only by back roads: the Kourtaliotiko gorge with its vulture nests, the palm valley of Preveli, the coves of Damnoni, the village of Plakias, Argyroupoli with its springs under the plane trees. The day becomes a chain of short hops rather than one long transfer. Westward, the same approach reaches Falassarna with its sunset beaches and Lake Kournas, the only freshwater lake on the island.

Some routes leave the road entirely. Boat trips to Preveli, Triopetra and Agios Pavlos bundle the drive to the jetty with the sailing itself — the coast there is sheer, and those beaches are all but unreachable by land. Airport transfers run separately to both Chania and Heraklion, each about an hour away; an early departure is exactly the case where the bus timetable is no help.
