Self-guided touring across Japan is dominated by one large audio-guide app rather than a separate route per city, narrating neighbourhoods, temples and food streets, in Tokyo, Kyoto, Takayama, Kanazawa, Nikko and beyond. That suits how most visitors actually move around the country, by train from city to city, rather than looping a single town on foot. Osaka alone also has a second, different kind of route: a puzzle quest through Dotonbori built around food and history rather than temples.
The nationwide app works in six languages, with points of interest linked to Google Maps and a web panel for building a personal route and keeping travel documents in one place. No puzzles, no guide, no schedule beyond the trains themselves, and it costs a fraction of a guide meeting a traveller at every stop. Osaka's food quest works differently: a mobile access code unlocks ten puzzles solved on foot over about an hour, tied to specific dishes and stalls rather than sights, ending at a meal instead of a viewpoint.
Practical. Season matters more than city for what the app is good for. Cherry blossom season, typically late March into April, and the few weeks of autumn colour either side of November, suit slow walking best in Kyoto and Nikko. Midsummer brings heat and humidity to Tokyo and Osaka alike, with August afternoons regularly past 33C, while Takayama, up in the Japan Alps, still sees snow into March. Trains run precisely on schedule, so the app's flexibility matters most after a missed connection. Download the route before boarding; tunnels and rural stretches drop signal for minutes at a time.
