Nature And Outdoors in Da Lat

9 experiences Vietnam

Nature around Da Lat is pine forest on a plateau at about 1,500 m. Langbiang is the high point: three peaks, a summit near 2,170 m, a legend of two lovers, and at its foot Lat village, home of the K'Ho people. South of town, Tuyen Lam Lake lies among pines, and the Datanla and Elephant waterfalls drop through the forest, with Pongour farther out. Out at Cau Dat, a tea hill and a wind-power hill are where people go to watch the sun rise over the hills, which is the idea behind cloud hunting.

The formats follow the landscape. The Langbiang trek is a full-day walk for a small group, around seven hours: pine woods and jungle up to the summit, a picnic lunch at the top, then down to Lat village. A shorter outing pairs a trek on Pinhatt with paddling on Tuyen Lam. The cloud-hunting morning is a private five-hour drive around sunrise to the tea hills, with a winery, a tea museum and a coffee stop. Waterfall days come in two forms: Datanla with Langbiang and the Crazy House, or Elephant and Pongour with farms and villages. For a longer stay there is a two-day camp on the lake, with a barbecue, a campfire and sunrise paddling. Most depart from the town with pickup.

Practical. December to March is dry; the rainy months run roughly from May to October, and the trails turn slippery. Pack a fleece: at this altitude January nights approach 12C and July nights hold near 16C, while daytime stays at or below 26C. Wear closed shoes with grip. Langbiang suits moderate fitness and is not recommended for people with heart or back problems or in pregnancy. Waterfall and cable-car tickets are sometimes extra. Cancelling more than a day ahead is normally free.
