Sightseeing in Egypt follows the Nile and the centuries. Around Cairo lie the Old Kingdom pyramid fields, which UNESCO lists as one property from Giza to Dahshur, where Sneferu's Bent and Red pyramids stand. Luxor, about an hour away by air, is the Thebes of the New Kingdom: Karnak on the east bank, the royal tombs on the west. Upriver the temples turn Ptolemaic and Roman, at Esna, Edfu and Kom Ombo, then Aswan with Philae and the road 280 km south to Abu Simbel. Alexandria is the Greek and Roman exception on the Mediterranean. Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh have little of their own and sell long day trips elsewhere.

Most Egypt sightseeing tours are private: a car, a driver and a guide, and many listings name a licensed Egyptologist. English is near universal and Spanish is the usual second language; Arabic, Italian, German and French are common, Russian less so. Distance sizes the day. Giza with Saqqara and Memphis fills six to eight hours, Alexandria from Cairo about ten, Abu Simbel from Aswan nine. Luxor in a day means a flight from Cairo, around twelve hours door to door, or ten to sixteen hours on the road from Hurghada. Cruise passengers get port excursions from Alexandria to Giza and Saqqara and from Safaga to Luxor. Multi-day packages linking Cairo, Luxor and Aswan are a separate category.

Practical. November to March is the comfortable window. In January Cairo's days average 19C and its nights 10C; in July the days reach 35C. Luxor and Aswan average 41C and 42C by day in July, and the temples are open to the sun, so Upper Egypt is a morning job. January nights at Luxor fall to 7C. Entrance fees are inside the price on some listings and extra on others, so compare like with like. Most private tours cancel free until the day before; fixed-departure group tours and port excursions generally do not refund. Take your passport on the Red Sea to Luxor run, which starts at about five in the morning.
