The jail staff will take you to a real prison palace with locked cells, a court, and horrible torture chambers with real torture devices and justice tools. Along the way, you'll learn about the powerful "Council of the Ten," which was made up of the best politicians in Venice and was in charge of justice in all of Venice's realms. Since the beginning of the Republic, when Venice's judicial system was set up, it has always worked hard to ensure that justice was done. Courts, lawyers, and magistrates make up the judiciary. One of the key points was the use of "operative police" to settle disputes and punish criminals. The Lords of the Night were Venetian Republic police and judges. Casanova was apprehended in the prison's Palace by the Lords of the Night!
From old writings and life-size figurines of the Lords of the Night, prisoners, judges, lawyers, and all other prisoners who worked were made to "live" in the Palace. The Prisons Palace was built in 1500 and had one of the oldest prisons in Europe. Discover the real graffiti left behind by the inmates, and hear how Casanova broke out of the maximum-security prison where he was being held! The Palace is now home to an important cultural institution in Venice. It has a beautiful view of the Riva degli Schiavoni, so be sure to see it!
