7.5 hours
English, Russian

Embark on a daylong journey to central Georgia to visit some of the region's many ancient sites and monuments, included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Tour the Stalin's Museum in Gori, see the beautiful Jvari monastery, and learn about the ancient Uplistsikhe cave city. Stop in Mtskheta, Georgia's historic capital and home to several medieval churches on the UNESCO World Heritage List, on your way back.

Uplistikhe, one of the oldest settlements in the Caucasus region, was first documented in the VII century. Scholars think that Uplistiskhe and the other architectural and archaeological structures in the area are from the Kura-Araxes culture. These sites date back to the beginning of the Bronze Age. Our next stop is the Museum of Joseph Stalin, which opened in 1937 and has 60,000 items. The museum includes Stalin's train car, which he used to go to Tehran, Yalta, and Potsdam, as well as the memorial house where Stalin is believed to have been born. The museum also features relics belonging to Stalin.

We will also go to the Georgian Orthodox Jvari Monastery, built in the sixth century on a hill overlooking Mtskheta, near where the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers meet. Soon after the Georgians became Christians, King Mirian III put up this large wooden cross. In the second half of the sixth century, Guaram, the ruler of Kartli, constructed a small church near the Holy Cross. Currently, this church is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, built in the eleventh century and a marvel of Georgian architecture, has been the country's religious center for hundreds of years. The complex comprises a church, a gate, a bell tower, castles, and homes for clergy. Christ's and Elijah's mantles are within the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. The building also contains the tomb of the city's founder, King Vakhtang Gorgasali. The cathedral is included on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
