Sé Cathedral is inspired by medieval European churches. The imposing construction marks the center of São Paulo (the ground zero of the city is at Sé Square), a very busy area. The exterior is marked by two 92-meter towers and a large dome. The large interior, with a capacity for 8,000 people, is surrounded by stained glass, mosaics and sacred works of art, as well as a large organ with five keyboards and 12,000 tubes, considered the largest in South America. In the crypt bishops and archbishops are buried, in addition to Cacique Tibiriçá, first citizen of São Paulo, and Father Feijó, regent of the Brazilian empire.
Visit the historic São Paulo founding site which is home to the Church of São José de Anchieta and city museum. With the intention to teach and catechize the natives, the Jesuits built the first school and church and began what 4 centuries later would become the largest city in the Southern hemisphere. The Church's got its current name in 2014 after having its patron José de Anchieta canonized by Pope Francis.
The São Bento Monastery is a guaranteed stop for anyone visiting São Paulo. It is one of those sacred tips that also applies to people who are not religious. The site, which hosted Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to Brazil, today houses, in addition to the church, the monastery with about 40 cloistered monks who follow the tradition of working and studying the scriptures. There are two big monastery attractions : the masses with Gregorian chants, and shop with breads, cakes, cookies and jams made by the monks themselves and whose recipes are secular. The way of preparing delicacies is only passed on to another monk so as not to lose quality with the massification. Prices are a little more expensive than bakeries, but the ingredients are fresh, refined and top quality. Not to mention as refined and much admired packaging, a beautiful gift for the tourist to take to a family.
Visit the Patriarca Square that is home to the Santo Antonio Church, a historic city's patrimony that holds invaluable artistic pieces of the colonial period. In addition to its famous baroque carving altar from 1780, the sanctuary features the oldest and most well-preserved murals of the city, dating back to the beginning of the seventeenth century, which were found during its last renovation in 2005. Having faced many restorations, the current front of the temple, conceived in eclectic style, dates from 1919.
San Francisco Convent and Sanctuary together with two other churches was the basis that of the city of São Paulo for more than 3 centuries when it was still a little village. Built in rammed earth (clay, stones and animal oil), the church was founded in 1647 by seven Franciscan religious, newcomers to São Paulo. Two illustrious residents of the convent were Frei Galvão (First Brazilian Saint), and Cardinal Dom Paulo Evaristo Arns, who transformed the convent into a sanctuary in the 1990s. Another curiosity is that in the basement, there is the convent bakery, which daily bakes various breads and sells them at the church door.
Visit the Museum of Sacred Art of São Paulo which is one of the main Brazilian institutions dedicated to the study, conservation and exhibition of objects related to sacred art. It houses one of the most important collections of sacred art in Brazil, accumulated throughout the 20th century, with pieces from ancient churches across the country. It has also images of saints made in Brazil and Europe between the 16th and 20th centuries, in addition to silverware and paintings.
Visit one of the most magnificent Churches in São Paulo Founded in 1940, the church is one of the most sought for weddings in town. Many, by the way, feature in social columns in São Paulo newspapers. The church was inspired in Brazilian and Portuguese baroque temples. The style is neo-colonial, very popular in São Paulo architecture from the 1920s and 1930s.
The Temple of Solomon is a work of monumental architecture. Owned by the protestant Universal Church do Reino de Deus, the Temple was inspired by the biblical temple of the same name, located in Jerusalem, and its construction aims to provide spiritual appeal. With a capacity for more than ten thousand people, based on biblical guidelines, the temple is the height of an 18-story building. The Temple also has a museum that brings the history of the ancient temples, with replicas of the original artifacts, so that the visitor really feels at the biblical times.
