Pick-up Location. Pillars of rock, sculpted by prehistoric rivers and crowned by otherworldly monasteries, monuments to the power of faith. Meteora means “suspended in space”. Your first, second and third sight of these impossibly tall, vertical rocks will have you gasping in disbelief. But it’s not just the incredible geology that stretches your imagination. It’s the monasteries balanced on these pinnacles. How did they get there? The monks who built them were the original rock climbers, lifting the materials up with pulleys, nets and their bare hands. Today, fans of the sport come to Meteora from the world over, to pit themselves against these gigantic rocks. Unesco has declared Meteora a World Heritage Site. The Greek state calls it a sacred spot, inviolate and immutable. You’ll no doubt come up with other adjectives to describe Meteora, this wonder of the world.
Venetikos River and Bridge. The Venetikos River, one of the largest tributaries of the Aliakmon, winds through the rugged landscape of Grevena in Northern Greece, carving dramatic limestone gorges, dense oak forests, and crystalline turquoise pools. Renowned as one of Greece's cleanest and most scenic rivers, it is a premier destination for outdoor adventurers, offering world-class rafting, kayaking, river trekking, and tranquil swimming spots during warmer months.
Travel Stop The Top - Coffee Break. Travel Stop "The Top" is a popular, laid-back roadside rest stop located along the National Road connecting Kalambaka (Meteora) and Grevena (EO Kalampakas Grevenon) in Northern Greece. Surrounded by green hills and shaded trees, it serves as a convenient pit stop for road-trippers, campervan travelers, and families driving between Western Thessaly and Western Macedonia.
The Monastery of Saint Stephen (Agios Stefanos) is one of the six active Eastern Orthodox monasteries built atop the soaring sandstone pillars of Meteora in Central Greece. Perched on the eastern edge of the rock complex, it is unique among the Meteora monasteries for being an active nunnery and the most accessible site for visitors.
The Monastery of the Holy Trinity (Agia Triada) is perhaps the most dramatically situated and iconic of the six active Eastern Orthodox monasteries perched atop the rock pillars of Meteora in Central Greece. Famous worldwide for its appearance in the 1981 James Bond film For Your Eyes Only, it sits isolated on a tall cliff, offering some of the most striking views in the region.
Viewpoint Meteora (often referred to along with nearby vantage spots like the Main Observation Deck of Meteora is one of the most breathtaking observation stops in the Meteora region of Central Greece, situated along the winding cliffside road that connects the ancient monasteries.
The Holy Monastery of Rousanos - Saint Barbara (commonly known as Roussanou Monastery) is one of the six active Eastern Orthodox monasteries perched atop the dramatic sandstone cliffs of Meteora in Central Greece. Founded in the 16th century and operating as a convent since the 1980s, it sits at a lower elevation compared to its neighbors, spanning across the entire flat top of a vertical rock pinnacle.
The Monastery of Varlaam is the second-largest of the six active Orthodox monasteries in Meteora, standing dramatically atop a steep rock cliff opposite Great Meteoron. Named after the anchorite monk Varlaam who first settled on the rock in the 14th century, the monastery was formally established in 1541 by two wealthy brother monks, Nektarios and Theofanis.
The Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron (Megalo Meteoro), dedicated to the Transfiguration of Jesus, is the oldest, largest, and highest of the six active Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Meteora. Founded in the 14th century by Saint Athanasios the Meteorite on the highest stone rock (Platys Lithos), it served as the founding heart of the entire monastic community and gave the region its name.
The Holy Monastery of Saint Nicholas Anapafsas at Meteora (Agios Nikolaos Anapafsas) is the first monastery encountered when driving up from the village of Kastraki toward Meteora. Built in the late 14th century on a small, narrow rock pillar, its compact physical footprint forced the builders to construct vertical, multi-tiered levels connected by internal staircases.
