The Dubai Butterfly Garden is the largest covered butterfly garden in the world, and it holds around 15,000 living butterflies across ten climate-controlled domes. They fly free around you rather than sitting behind glass, so the experience is one of standing still and waiting to see what lands - on a sleeve, a shoulder, occasionally a hand. Nine of the domes are given over to the butterflies themselves; the tenth is an education space that follows the full lifecycle from egg through caterpillar and chrysalis to adult, with live specimens at each stage, which makes it genuinely useful for children rather than merely pretty. There is also a butterfly museum and an art section on site. Allow around ninety minutes. Wear bright colours if you want butterflies to settle on you, move slowly, and avoid strong perfume. The domes are air-conditioned and fully covered, so the garden stays open and comfortable through the summer, unlike much of what is nearby.
