Set off on a private, bespoke journey through the serene beauty of Hvalfjörður, one of Iceland’s most peaceful and lesser-known fjords. This tailor-made tour invites you to explore dramatic mountain scenery, quiet coastal roads, and hidden waterfalls, all at a relaxed pace designed around your interests. Far from the crowds, Hvalfjörður offers a sense of timeless Iceland, where nature, history, and tranquility come together.

With a friendly local guide, you’ll discover scenic viewpoints, charming spots along the fjord, and stories that bring the landscape to life. The itinerary is flexible and shaped to your wishes, making the experience truly personal. Additional activities or extended stops can be added upon request, with extra charges applying for longer durations or special experiences beyond the standard tour time.

Itinerary

Pickup from Accommodation. Your expert local driver-guide from Your Friend in Reykjavik will pick you up at your accommodation in Reykjavik. Begin the scenic drive northwest out of Reykjavik, greeting the views of Mount Esja, the guardian of the city.

Þórufoss Waterfall. Short stop at Þórufoss Waterfall, known for its appearance in Game of Thrones (Season 4, Drogon and the Goats). Take photos and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Drive through Hvalfjörður Fjord. Continue onto Hvalfjarðarvegur (Road 47) and drive through the beautiful Hvalfjörður Fjord, or Whale Fjord. Admire dramatic fjord landscapes, waterfalls, and rugged mountains while your guide shares local history and folklore.

Steðji – Elf Rock Stop. Take a short detour to Steðji, the goblet-shaped Elf Rock. Learn about Staupasteinn, the elf said to reside in the rock, and hear stories of Icelandic folklore. Enjoy light photography and the mystical surroundings.

Hvalfjörður Scenic Exploration. Continue driving along Hvalfjörður, stopping at notable viewpoints, small waterfalls, and historic sites along the fjord. Optional short walks to scenic spots and hidden gems along the route. Your guide shares insights about local geology, history, and traditional Icelandic life.

Return to Reykjavik. Drive back to Reykjavik via the same scenic fjord route. Drop off at your accommodation, completing the private Hvalfjörður experience.
