About 3,500 years ago, on the hill of Barumini, ancient people built a nuraghe and a small village of huts.
The nuraghi are extraordinary monuments, halfway between defensive and civil architecture. They have survived to the present day as evidence of a thousand-year-old culture connected to the megalithic civilizations of the Mediterranean basin.
The architectural structures consist of two-storey truncated cone-shaped towers, built with large stones arranged without mortar in overlapping concentric circles that gradually narrow towards the top.
The Nuragic civilization played an important role in the spread of Mycenaean culture and later Phoenician culture, although some of its distinctive features remain shrouded in mystery, perhaps because they are difficult to understand within the framework of classical Greek culture.
The Su Nuraxi site represents the most complete and best-preserved example of a nuraghe. It has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997.
On 29 July 2006, the “Casa Zapata Museum Complex” was inaugurated, consisting of three sections: archaeological, ethnographic, and historical.
The uniqueness of Casa Zapata lies in the presence of an 18th-century building constructed directly over the remains of a complex nuraghe called “Nuraxi e Cresia”. This creates a unique spectacle and a sense of wonder for visitors, who are fascinated by such extraordinary beauty.
Following the excavations carried out in the 1950s at “Su Nuraxi” by Professor Giovanni Lilliu, the desire to create a place in Barumini capable of housing and preserving the archaeological finds has always remained alive. Today, Casa Zapata fulfils this role: safeguarding, promoting knowledge of, and enhancing the value of these precious cultural assets.
Meeting in Cagliari. Meeting at bus stop near Piazza Yenne, Cagliari center in the morning.
Visit of Barumini. In Barumini, a small village in the countryside, on the top of a hill lies the most famous Sardinian nuraghe: Su Nuraxi. Thanks to its exceptional state of conservation and the complexity of its structure, which has five towers (one in the middle and the others around it), city walls, and the ruins of an ancient village, it was awarded as an integral part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, the only one on the island.
Visit Casa Zapata Museum. After visiting Su Nuraxi, we will take you to Casa Zapata Museum where the ruins of Su Nuraxi ‘e Crexia are enclosed; the nuraghe is located, in fact, in the heart of the town of Barumini and has been used as a foundation for the construction of a 15th-century Spanish noble house.
