Jvari Monastery is the VI century Georgian Orthodox monastery built on a hill opposite Mtskheta, at the confluence of Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers. Shortly after the adoption of Christianity, King Mirian III erected an enormous wooden cross on this site. In the 2nd half of the VI century Guaram, the ruler of Kartli, built a small church beside the Holy Cross. The church is on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.

Mtskheta was the ancient capital of the Eastern Georgian Kingdom. The favourable natural conditions, its strategic location at the intersection of trade routes and its close relations with the Roman Empire, the Persian Empire, Syria, Palestine, and Byzantium, generated and stimulated the development of Mtskheta and led to the integration of different cultural influences with local cultural traditions.

Gori is a city in Georgia located at the mouth of Mtkvari and Didi Liakhvi, 588 m above sea level. The main attractions of Gori are the Gori Fortress on the high rocky hill in the middle of the city, the Virgin Marys Christmas Cathedral of the XIX century, the Drama Theater, the Historical-Ethnographic Museum and Joseph Stalin's museum. At the outskirts of Gori there is a Balneological resort Gorijvari, a cave town of Uplistsikhe and a cross-domed cathedral Ateni Sioni of the VII century.

Uplistsikhe is an ancient rock-hewn town in Eastern Georgia. Uplistsikhe is identified by archaeologists as one of the oldest urban settlements in Georgia. The central part of Uplistsikhe is the largest, contains a bulk of the Uplistsikhe rock-cut structures, and is connected to the southern part via a narrow rock-cut pass and a tunnel. Narrow alleys and sometimes staircases radiate from the central street to the different structures. The Uplistsikhe cave complex has been on the tentative list for inclusion into the UNESCO World Heritage program since 2007.
