The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve sprawls across the rocky bluff. It's a protected natural reserve with antelope, the endangered Cape mountain zebra, and other unusual animal species.
The reserve is also a sanctuary for maritime birds, with 250 documented bird species. Cape Point marks the extreme tip of the Cape Peninsula. It's a well-known landmark that is sometimes misidentified as Africa's southernmost point. On Cape Point, there are two national historic monuments dedicated to the world's greatest famous explorers: Bartolomeu Dias and Vasco da Gama, who was the first European explorer to round Cape Point in 1488.
