Bordeaux's old centre, the Port of the Moon along the curve of the Garonne, earned its UNESCO status for staying almost entirely intact from the 18th century, and self-guided routes use that continuity to move fast between stops. Place de la Bourse mirrors itself in the Miroir d'eau fountain, the Grosse Cloche bell tower still marks the old city gate, and Place des Quinconces opens into one of the largest squares in Europe. Underneath the stone facades, the city's puzzle games dig into a rougher history — the Revolution years, Bordeaux's role in the Atlantic slave trade, and the WWII Resistance — that the elegant streets do not advertise on their own.
The games take different routes through the same district. The World City Trail scavenger hunt runs about two hours between ten-plus stops — the cathedral, Porte Dijeaux, the Opera National — using a booking code to unlock GPS-guided stops, narration switched on if you want it. The Mystery Quest is built as a story instead: twelve chapters following a theft across Place des Quinconces, Place de la Bourse, the Grand Theatre and Notre-Dame, with audio playing at every stop, so headphones matter here more than for the plainer hunt. Both start on demand and pause for as long as a glass of Bordeaux takes.
Practical. Bordeaux has an Atlantic climate softer than inland France — summer afternoons average around 27C, with rain a real possibility any month, so a light waterproof matters more here than sun cream. Winters stay mild and grey, rarely below 5C. The Miroir d'eau fountain switches between a shallow pool and a mist cycle through the day, worth timing a photo stop around rather than fighting it. Audio-heavy chapters in the Mystery Quest are easiest with headphones and a charged phone, and weekend afternoons around Place de la Bourse get busy with tour groups by early afternoon.
