Self-Guided Tours in Strasbourg

France

Strasbourg's old town sits on an island, the Grande Ile, ringed by the Ill river and its canals, and self-guided routes cross it between two very different neighbourhoods. Petite France, downstream, keeps the half-timbered houses where tanners once worked, their open lofts once used to dry hides. The cathedral at the centre held the title of tallest building in the world for over two centuries, from 1647 until 1874, and its pink sandstone spire still dominates every route through Place de la Cathedrale. Eglise Saint-Thomas, sometimes called the city's Protestant cathedral, adds a second, quieter landmark a few streets over.

A couple of games cover the Grande Ile differently. The World City Trail hunt is the longer of the two, three hours across ten-plus stops from the covered bridges of Ponts Couverts to Place Kleber and the Opera du Rhin, unlocked with a numbered code and GPS-guided directions, narration switched on if wanted — no entrance fees, since every puzzle sits outdoors. Explorial's version runs about two hours and leans harder into Petite France and the cathedral square, with riddles tallying a score between whoever's playing. Both start on demand.

Practical. Strasbourg has a continental climate sharper than the rest of France — summer afternoons average near 25C, while winter turns properly cold, often under 2C, with the canals occasionally icing at the edges. The cathedral's astronomical clock draws a crowd around half past midday for its daily mechanical show, worth timing a route to catch rather than fight through. Petite France gets busiest with tour groups by mid-morning, so starting either game before ten keeps the tanners' quarter photographable without a crowd in every shot. The Christmas market, one of the oldest in France, fills the Grande Ile through December and is when both games go slowest through the crowds.
