Self-guided walking in Croatia splits across three old towns, and each wears a different kind of history. Split's route threads Diocletian's Palace — a Roman emperor's retirement fortress that became the city's living core, Peristil square and Jupiter's Temple among its stops. Zagreb's climbs from Dolac Market up past the Stone Gate and Lotrščak Tower to St Mark's Church and its tiled roof. Dubrovnik, walled and compact, gets the richest spread: a straight hunt past Pile Gate, the Rector's Palace and the cathedral, a Game of Thrones escape game built around the show's filming spots, and a medieval-adventure quest set in 1566, when the city ruled itself as the Republic of Ragusa.

All of it runs through an app rather than a guide. The Split and Zagreb hunts use the World City Trail app — a ticket number, GPS between stops, and an optional voice-over at each one — and take about two hours apiece. Dubrovnik's three differ more in story than mechanics: its own World City Trail hunt covers the same ground a guided walk would, the Game of Thrones escape game uses the Questo app to send players to the real film locations with a soldier's story layered over them, and the medieval quest, also on Questo, runs to fourteen chapters through the Rector's and Sponza Palaces and the city walls, the longest of the three at close to three hours. Every one of them can be paused for lunch or a swim and picked back up later, since none of them keeps to a fixed schedule.

Practical. Split and Zagreb suit a walk any time from spring to autumn, with summer days around 28-32C on the coast and around 26-28C inland in Zagreb. Dubrovnik's stone lanes hold heat with no shade at all, so its three routes work far better before ten in the morning or after four in the afternoon between June and August, when cruise-ship crowds also peak at midday. Flat, closed shoes matter everywhere the walk crosses old-town limestone, which turns slick within seconds of any rain.
