Wellness in Indonesia covers two things that barely belong in the same sentence. The first is a body of treatment with names and recipes behind it. Balinese massage is firm and oiled, worked with palms and thumbs from the feet upwards. The lulur that follows is a Javanese court scrub of turmeric, rice powder and sandalwood, devised in the palaces of Solo to prepare a bride, and it ends with yoghurt and a bath full of petals. Boreh, a warm paste of ginger, clove and cinnamon, was a rice farmer's remedy for cold legs long before it reached a menu. The second is melukat, purification under temple spouts, which is not a treatment at all but a religious act families perform for themselves.

The offer follows the same split. At one end is a shopfront on a Ubud lane where an hour costs a few euros and the towel is thin; at the other a resort spa charging twenty times that for the same hour, and between them the villa packages that add a scrub, a flower bath and a meal. One local invention is worth knowing: the departure package, built around the late flights out of Denpasar, where you give up the room at noon, take a treatment and go to the airport from the spa. Ubud carries the imported layer too: day retreats, sound sessions in the twin pyramids at the Pyramid of Chi, guided ceremony at the Taman Beji Griya waterfall.

Practical. the pressure is stronger than most visitors expect, and asking for lighter is normal and understood. You change into disposable underwear, and the therapist works in oil, so shower afterwards rather than before. Late afternoon is the sensible slot, once the heat has gone and the walking is done. Prices are quoted per treatment, tipping is a note at the end rather than a percentage, and small places take cash only. Ceremony at a temple is done fully clothed in a sarong and you come out soaked, so pack dry things. None of this is medical, and the places worth going to say so first.
