Romantic in Thera

Fira has one advantage over famous Oia: the whole island does not descend on it at seven in the evening. The capital is large enough that you can watch the sunset without queuing for a spot — from the terraces along the caldera rim, from restaurants above the drop, from the staircase down to the old port. An evening walk through town for two works precisely because of that: the streets are pedestrian, there are no cars at all, and the light changes slowly while the lamps come on at the jetty below and on Thirasia across the water.

The second scenario is to leave the shore. Catamarans and motor yachts sail from the quay beneath the town: daytime runs with swimming stops at the Red and White beaches, evening ones with dinner on board. The point of the evening trip is simple — you end up opposite Oia at exactly that hour, only you watch it from the water with no crowd behind you. There is a private format too, where the route and the timing are arranged around you, and a more intimate option on a motor yacht for a handful of people.

Away from the water the romance gets quieter. The wineries keep terraces above the caldera and pour assyrtiko along with vinsanto; trips out to them are usually timed so the tasting falls at sunset. The traditional villages tour takes you to Pyrgos and Mesa Gonia, where there is no caldera view and almost nobody about. And a transfer from the airport or the port straight to the hotel removes the one genuinely fraying part of the trip — hauling luggage through narrow streets while the taxi queue barely moves.
